Between the nights of January 9th and 10th, 2024, the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) assigned to excavate the dual-tube Taormina tunnel (6.2km) for the High Capacity Catania-Messina Rail Line, specifically the Giampilieri-Fiumefreddo section within the Fiumefreddo-Taormina/Letojanni Lot 1, underwent transportation from the port of Augusta (SR) to the port of Giardini Naxos (ME) via a shallow-draft barge. Subsequently, in the ensuing nights, the TBM was conveyed to the operational site using specialized trolleys. This transportation process involved the closure of the existing road system and the imposition of a parking ban along the affected arterial roads.
