A 38km bridge in the South China Sea will form a fixed
crossing over the Pearl River Estuary between Zhuhai and Macau on the western
side and Hong Kong on the eastern side. The Y-shaped bridge starts from Lantau
Island in Hong Kong with branches to Zhuhai in south China’s Guangdong Province
and Macao.
The 29.6 km main section is in Zhuhai waters and comprises
22.9 km of bridge work including three cablestayed bridges with spans ranging
from 280 m to 460 m, viaducts spanning 75 m and 110 m, a 6.7 km underwater
tunnel and two artificial islands. The tunnel, more than 40 m under the sea,
includes 28 straight sections and 5 curve sections, each 180 m long, 38 m wide,
11.40 m high and weighing 72,000 t, they will be placed on the seabed and
connected. On Saturday 08.10.2016 the assembling mission of the first curve
section (33° sections) of the undersea tunnel for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao
Bridge has already been successfully completed . The operation to install the
curved tube started at around 05:30 on Friday and was over by 07:20 on Saturday
morning.
The remaining four immersed tubes of the tunnel
project are scheduled for installation early next year. Construction began in
December of 2009 at Zhuhai and the project is scheduled for completion in 2017.
