On the 17/04/2023 the Bolzano City Council gave the go ahead for RFI to construct the new Virgolo railway tunnel with three tracks and the moving of the Merano line junction. The new Virgolo tunnel will thus allow the Merano line to enter the Bolzano station independently, eliminating the current use of the Brenner line. The works will be able to begin in 2024, with the aim to be ended in 2026 by the start of the Olympic Games. 

Once the rail tunnel is completed, another tunnel will be built next to it, for a southbound dual carriageway, while the existing road tunnel will be used as a northbound dual carriageway.
