The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) allocated EUR113.15 million (USD125 million) to the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) for the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Silicon Valley Phase II project. This is the first project to receive a funding allocation under FTA’s Expedited Project Delivery Pilot Program. The allocation through the Expedited Project Delivery Pilot Program streamlines project delivery allowing VTA to fast track its funding process by more than 14 months.
The BART Silicon Valley Phase II project is a 10.46 km (6.5-mile), 4-station extension of the BART system from the Berryessa Station through downtown San Jose to the City of Santa Clara. The BART Silicon Valley Phase 2 Extension will operate in a single-bore tunnel underneath Santa Clara Street. In April 2019, VTA and BART agreed to a side by side track configuration with 7.31 m (24-foot) centre platforms in an approximate 15.54 m (51-foot) interior diameter tunnel. VTA’s General Engineering Consultant (GEC) will now further develop the concept and bring the project’s design to a preliminary engineering level by Fall of 2020 to be timed with an application for a grant through the Federal Transit Administration Expedited Project Delivery Pilot Funding Program.
