Expansion of the northern Zurich bypass begins

07/06/2016

On 06.06.2016 in Regensdorf the main works for the expansion of the 10 km northern Zurich bypass began. The bypass, which has been open to traffic since 1985 with two lanes in both directions, runs between the Limmattaler Kreuz junction and the Zurich Northern branch. Its main infrastructure is the twin-bore tunnel Gubrist.

Since 1990 the traffic using the Northern Bypass has doubled from 60,000 to 120,000 vehicles per day. This has led to more congestion and accidents, as a result the bottleneck that causes this needs to be removed. Before 2025, under the Federal Roads Office (Ofrou) supervision, the northern Zurich bypass will be expanded in both directions to three lanes and the 3250 m long Gubrist tunnel will have a third three-lane tube created on the north side. The existing  tubes will be also be updated. The expected total cost is EUR 1.40 billion. For further information please click ch/53 for the tunnelbuilder archive.
