DTSS Section Breaks Through in Singapore
29/01/2004
DTSS Section Breaks Through in SingaporeOn 15th December, 2003 Penta-Ocean Construction broke through to complete 7,716 m of tunnel, the single longest drive using an earth pressure balance machine in southeast Asia. The tunnel drive forms contract T-02 Bedok tunnel of Singapore's Deep Tunnel Sewerage System for the Public Utilities Board (PUB). The 7.16 m-diameter EPB machine, supplied by JFE (previously NKK) of Japan, was originally designed to tackle the Old Alluvium, a cemented sand widespread throughout eastern Singapore. However, shortly after contract award it was discovered that modifications would be required to the TBM following the discovery of granite over the final portion of the tunnel drive. Having successfully negotiated the granite, the segmentally lined tunnel is now to be re-lined with a corrosion protection lining comprising HDPE faced in situ concrete to provide a finished internal diameter of 6 m.
