Brisbane’s new underground making tracks - Rail tracks installation in the Brisbane's Cross River Rail’s twin tunnels commenced from just south of the future Albert Street station, and is headed towards the Brisbane River and future Woolloongabba station.
The 40-strong track installation crew will progress - around 50-100 metres a day- out the project’s 5.9-km twin tunnels with around 25 km of rail over the next 12 months, creating Brisbane’s first below-river rail crossing in the process.
Unlike surface tracks where rails are laid on top of sleepers and ballast (or rocks), rail in the tunnels is placed on concrete blocks, which are then embedded into the underlying concrete slab.
Northern Tunnel Portal construction update
Excavation and construction of the Northern Tunnel Portal structure is ongoing and due for completion in late 2022. Construction of the permanent internal walls and base slab is now underway. In the coming months, E&M services will start to be installed within the structure and tunnel via the Northern Tunnel Portal . Click here and au/37 for tunnelbuilder archive.
