The Lower Thames Crossing, a major new road linking Kent, Thurrock and Essex, would nearly double road capacity across the River Thames.
The multi-billion-pound project will connect communities, boost the economy and add vital extra resilience to the road network while reducing pressure on the existing Dartford Crossing. It is set to be the most ambitious road project since the M25 opened 30 years ago and will include the UK’s longest road tunnel.
The feedback on the preferred route, which the government announced in April 2017, has helped Highways England (HE) to continue to assess and refine the proposals. The updated proposals for the Lower Thames Crossing
include:
• approximately 23 km (14.5 miles) of new roads connecting the tunnel to the existing road network
• three lanes in both directions with a maximum speed limit of 112 km/h (70mph)
• improvements to the M25, A2 and A13, where the Lower Thames Crossing connects to these roads
• two 4km (2.5 mile) tunnels, one for southbound traffic, one for northbound traffic crossing beneath the river.
A ten-week consultation on the latest designs started on the 10.10.2018 and will run until the 20th of December 2018. There will be 25 public information events held across Kent and Essex to obtain feedback from the local population. People can also send their views via the online response form www.lowerthamescrossing.co.uk/haveyoursay , freepost or by email ltc.consultation@traverse.ltd
