Construction of the E6 Kvithammar – Asen – works begin.

11/03/2022

Construction has of the new E6 from Kvithammer (Stjørdal municipality) to Asen (Levanger municipality) for Nye Veier by general contractor Hæhre Entreprenør AS. The works started with a first symbolic explosion for the Forbordsfjell tunnel.

The NOK 5.6 billion contract, excluding VAT, was signed in December 2021. The plan is for the entire section to be completed in 2027, the stretch of road is 19 km and is being built as a four-lane motorway with a speed limit of 110 km / h. It will shorten the travel time by about 9 minutes, which halves the current travel time.

The section includes five tunnels:

  • the 6.1 km Forbordsfjell tunnel will be built from both adits: first from the south side where the first blast was carried out;  at the end of March 2022 work will also start from the north side in Langsteindalen;
  • the 1.4 km Hoghammar tunnel will be built from Langsteindalen through Høghammaren towards Vuddudalen. Tunnelling is planned here at the end of 2023 and will take about a year to complete;
  • the 1.8km Ramshammar tunnel will be built from the south (Vuddudalen). The time to break through the tunnel will be approx. 15 months;
  • the 300 m Grubbas tunnel whose construction is planned from the north (Stokkan) and will be built between the winter of 2023 to the summer of 2024;
  • the 2.1km Asen tunnel connecting Stokkan in the south and Vassmarka in the north. Tunnelling will start from the north in the autumn of 2022 and from the south in the spring of 2023. End of work is estimated in the winter of 2024.

In the new E6 section a number of concrete structures are included in the project, including the Vollselv bridge with its 360 m above the Vollselva. Furthermore, there are several smaller bridges, culverts, 20 portals for the tunnels, technical buildings and other smaller structures.

The current road is not viable as it mainly consists of a two-lane road with partly steep curvatures with difficult ascents and descents. There is a risk of major accidents on parts of the section, at the same time as there are no detour options at Langstein and in Vuddudalen. In the event of accidents or other incidents that cause the road to be closed, the country is in divided into two. The new road will have continuous middle sections and separate tunnels. This will provide a significantly safer trunk road, and it will provide better and more stable accessibility. Hæhre is the turnkey contractor, and the design is carried out by the Aas-Jakobsen / ViaNova network. The project has been through a collaboration phase from 2019-2021 where the consultant, contractor and client have prepared approved zoning plans for the project in Stjørdal and Levanger municipalities, respectively.
