Construction of Sornaistentunnel approved

Helsinki City Council have approved the Sornaistentunnel project between the Sornainen coastal road and the Hermann coastal road and its implementation in stages as follows:  

  • In the first phase, the northern concrete tunnel section of the Sörnäistentunnel and the underground structures of the related ramps will be built from Kalasatama to Pasila tram and Hermann coastal road in 2022-2024. The cost estimate for the first phase is EUR 50 million based on costs in 2021.  
  • the planning and preparation for the implementation of the remaining part of the Sörnäistentunnel, which will be built in the second phase, will be continued and the cost estimate for the section will be submitted for a separate decision. In further planning, special attention will be paid to the design of the tunnel openings and their suitability for the urban environment.   

The total length of the new tunnel connection is about 1,600 m:  two 180 m open air sections at the end of the tunnel and two one-way and a single-lane tunnels (290 m cut & cover from Sörnäinen coastal road, 800 m rock tunnel and 150 m cut & cover from Hermann coastal road).   

The  Sörnäisten tunnel will facilitate north-south traffic by directing cars underground. The tunnel will affect the districts of Kalasatama, Suvilahti and Teurastamo.  

Although Helsinki has not yet decided on the cost estimates for all the phases of the Sörnäisten tunnel project, it has announced that the total cost estimate is approximately EUR 180 million. What is more, the annual operating costs will be around EUR 2 million.
