Conference on Design and Construction of Tunnels and Shafts for the DLR Woolwich Extension

24/09/2007
Conference on Design and Construction of Tunnels and Shafts for the DLR Woolwich ExtensionThe Docklands Light Railway (DLR) Woolwich Arsenal extension is an integral part of Transport for London's investment plans and forms a key part of London's Olympic transport plan. Through this project, DLR will extend its network to Woolwich Arsenal thereby providing another vital river crossing in this area which is undergoing extensive regeneration. The 2.5 km extension includes the construction of twin 5.3 m i.d. tunnels under the River Thames from King George V station in North Woolwich terminating in a new subsurface station adjacent to, and integrated with, the current Woolwich Arsenal Network Rail station. The tunnels have been constructed through variable ground conditions including clays, gravels, chalk and Thanet sands using a Lovat Earth Pressure Balance TBM. Click here, here and uk/19. Read E-News Weekly 4/2007. Visit www.lovat.comAt the mid-point of the tunnels, a 15 m i.d. ventilation and emergency intervention shaft has been sunk adjacent to the River Thames. From this shaft, a 5 m i.d. ventilation adit will be driven out beneath river with cross vent tunnels connecting to the running tunnels. There are also two emergency cross passages connecting the running tunnels. The meeting will commence with an overview of the project deliverables, the management of PFI schemes and application of the BTS Joint Code of Practice for Risk Management by the client. The designer will give a technical overview of the project and will discuss the design issues related with the various structures, shafts and tunnels constructed. This will include details of fire engineering and ventilation provision. The designer will also present aspects of the design delivery process, including the risk management approach. The talk will conclude with the contractor presenting a description of TBM procurement/specification followed by a brief description of shaft and tunnels construction.Contact Jade Donovan, tel. +44 20 76652233, fax +44 20 77991325, e-mail jade.donovan@ice.org.uk 38/07.
