 Waterproofing system for Buenavista 2 Tunnel

The new Chirajara-Villavicencio roadway represents the final third of the Bogotá-Villavicencio corridor, between the departments of Cundinamarca and Meta, with a total length of 22.60 km. The new roadway will reduce the travelling time between the region of El Llano and Bogotà, ensuring high levels of safety. The tunnel is part of a private initiative for Chirajara - Villavicencio, a project carried out by the National Infrastructure Agency (ANI) through the Concessionaire Vial Andina SAS (Coviandina).

The project consisted of 16 bridges and 7 tunnels, below are the most outstanding infrastructural works completed:-

- Pipiral Viaduct;

- Buenavista 2 Tunnel;

- Pipiral toll expansion;

- 12 kilometers of tunnels;

The Buenavista 2 Tunnel

The Buenavista 2 Tunnel is the longest tunnel of the Chirajara - Villavicencio road, with a length of 4.6 km.

The Tunnel is considered a complex and challenging infrastructure for Colombian engineering. It crosses the mountainous strip on the eastern flank of the Andean Cordillera and intercepts metamorphic and sedimentary rocks from the Paleozoic to the Tertiary periods interspersed  by several geological faults.

The technical solution adopted for the waterproofing of the Buenavista 2 Tunnel consists of an “umbrella” single layer waterproofing system made of a 2mm thick PVC-P membrane laying on a regularization layer of polypropylene non-woven geotextile with a thickness of 5mm. This was provided by MAPEI UTT. The installation of the waterproofing system is being carried out by Protex COLOMBIA, a leading company in this sector.
