In February 2019 the
European Commission (EC) endorsed the EUR 517 million funding dedicated to a
section of the M6 metro line planned to
link the Bucharest airport ( Henri
Coanda in Otopeni) with the Bucharest North railway station (Gara de Nord).
The M6 will have 14.2 km and 12 stations: 1 station shared
with the existing M4 Line and 11 planned
new stations. The European
Commission will finance only the 6 km section that links the existing metro
network (1 Mai station) with Baneasa shopping centre, where the future metro
station Tokyo will be located. Eu will not finance the segment from Baneasa to
the airport.
The Commission expressed concerns about the lack of an
accurate evaluation of the alternative solutions (underground versus
above-ground link) and visible under-evaluation of the cost for the second
section of the route. The second section will be partly financed with 300
million euros by a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
The whole project is estimated to cost EUR 1.37 billion (RON
6.35 billion), VAT included), out of which EUR600 million (RON 2.78 billion) is
the value of the section financed by the EU. Romania still has to contribute
15% of this value after the co-financing was increased from 75% to 85%. The
line is expected to be completed by 2025-2030. Click ro/13 for tunnelbuilder
