On 10.12.2014 the hybrid TBM launched in 2011 holed the 4.5 km-long tunnel beneath the bed of Lake Mead. The project involves the construction of a system for collecting and transporting the waters of Lake Mead to the city of Las Vegas, independent from the water level in Lake Mead.
The work comprises an access shaft, excavated in the rock on the shore of the lake, approximately 200 m-deep and with a diameter of 9 m. From the shaft the TBM drove 4.5 km of the 4.8 km tunnel with an internal diameter of 6.10 m.
The intake work will be located at the end of the tunnel, approximately 100 m below the surface of the lake, made from a pipe-shaped tubular steel structure with a diameter of 6 m and a height of approximately 30 m. Construction on this third intake is scheduled for completion in 2015. Click here and us/16 for tunnelbuilder archive. 52/14.
