Consortium SA.MA.C (ICS Salini-Matarrese-Carena) has announced breakthrough of the 625 m-long south tube of Cavallo tunnel on the A14 motorway, Senigallia-Ancona Nord section. Work started July, 2011 and was carried out 24/7. The south tube ID is 18 m with a 218 sq m maximum section. It will eventually be linked to the north tube with a crosspassage, length 45 m, width 4.9 m, height 4.65 m. Poor geotechnical characteristics required advance support using rotoinjection ahead of face drilling. Once the new south tube is opened to traffic, widening of the existing tube will be undertaken to become the new northbound tube and at 610 m-long, of which 109 m is cut/cover. 37/12.
