Brazil - Breakthrough at the Analia Franco station of the São Paulo Line 2 extension

On 27 June, the TBM Cora Coralina, broke through at the Analia Franco station, the second TBM for the extension from Vila Prudente to Penha of the São Paulo Metro Line 2-Green.

The TBM - which started from the Rapadura Complex - travelled 1.6 km, removing 141,000 m³ of spoil. For the lining of the tunnel between Vila Formosa and Analia Franco stations it installed 873 concrete rings. Since May when it reached the Coxim shaft in the Vila Formosa area, the TBM has excavated 400 m and installed 253 rings.

The TBM will now undergo about 20 days of maintenance, before restarting excavation towards the future Santa Clara station, stopping first at the Cestari shaft. The final destination of this excavation phase is the Falchi Gianini shaft - located just before the Vila Prudente station (already in operation) - passing also through the Orfanato station. Once this section is completed, the TBM will be disassembled and reassembled at the Penha station site, in order to excavate in the direction of the Rapadura Complex and complete the entire tunnel.

The TBM christened Cora Coralina - 100 m long, 11.66 m in diameter and weighing 500 t - is capable of excavating and lining up to 15 m/day of tunnel. Up to 150 people work directly on its operation, which takes place in three daily shifts, involving engineers, mechanics, technicians and electricians. The TBM - equipped with back-up, hyperbaric chamber, ventilation system and segments erector - will excavate approximately 7.5 km of tunnel, part of the Line 2 extension.

Extension of Line 2-Green

With the EUR 2.43 bn (BRL13.4 bn) exclusive investment from the São Paulo government, the Line 2-Green is being extended between Vila Prudente and Penha, to build a further 8.4 km section (8 km of which will be operational) with eight new stations, crossing the eastern zone of São Paulo. The goal is to complete the first stage, from Vila Prudente to Vila Formosa, by 2026, while the second section, from Vila Formosa to Penha, is scheduled for 2027. When ready, the new stretch will speed up the journey for residents of the eastern region and facilitate reaching other regions of São Paulo, as well as redistributing passenger demand on the other metro and train lines, bringing more comfort to people.
