The Federal Roads Office has drawn up, and discussed with the cantons, a new variant involving the construction of a tunnel under the Rhine between Birsfelden and the North Ring Road branch Wiese to decongest traffic on the Eastern Ring Road in Basel. At the south, the new road will connect to the Birsfelden junction and will continue in a tunnel. Forecast investment of CHF1.4 bn will increase by CHF300 mn for the possible extension towards Germany. Before a final decision it will be necessary to investigate environmental impact, financing and the division between the cantons of the higher investment due to an underground solution not requiring work on the existing road network and minimizing interventions in built-up areas.
