Annual Tunnel Test Results Disclosed as EU Adopts New Directive on Safety

13/05/2004
Annual Tunnel Test Results Disclosed as EU Adopts New Directive on SafetyADAC, the German motoring club, has presented the results of its sixth annual tunnel test survey since 1999. This year's survey has analysed the safety in 27 tunnels in nine European countries. As was the case for earlier surveys, ADAC has not been allowed to assess safety in Italian tunnels. ADAC experts assessed anti-fire protection, lighting, traffic management, ventilation in case of fire, escape exits and rescue accesses, communication and crisis management.Nine tunnels have been rated "very good" and nine others have been rated "good". Safety was judged as being "defective" in three tunnels. This is the worst rating. They are the Tuhobic and Ucka tunnels in Croatia and the 1,950 m Wattkopft tunnel in Ettlingen, Germany. It is the first time in six years that a German tunnel receives the "defective" rating. The results coincide with the adoption on 20th April by the European Parliament of a new directive imposing minimum safety requirements in road tunnels longer than 500 m.
