Aker Wirth TBM for Switzerland Aker Wirth has been commissioned to construct and deliver a gripper tunnel boring machine (TBM) by ARGE Zugangsstollen Limmern (AZL). The order has a total value of over EUR20 million. AZL comprises six companies: Rothpletz, Lienhard + Cie AG, (CH); Baresel GmbH, (DE); Wayss & Freytag, (DE); G. Lazzarini & Co. AG, (CH); Andrea Pitsch AG, (CH); and Ragotti+Weber Bau AG, (CH).The machine will be used for the subterranean expansion of the Linth-Limmern power plant in Switzerland, boring approximately 4 km from the access gallery near the village of Linthal in the Canton of Glarus, to the new machine cavern. The tunnel, with a diameter of 8.03 m, will set a new record for inclined TBM drives. It rises from 800 m to approximately 1,800 m above sea level with a constant gradient of 24 percent.
