On 11.10.2012, excavation of the 2.4 km-long Ahrental access tunnel was completed as part of the Brenner Base Tunnel. The 100 sq m cross-section was driven using NATM techniques at 3-5 blasts/day for a 4-6 m daily advance. The Ahrental access tunnel will be used for delivering construction material into the base tunnel, and for extracting muck.
