The ground breaking ceremony for the Three Rivers Protection and Overflow Reduction Tunnel took place on the 15.06.2017. The project will cost in the region of $188 Million. The tunnel will be 60.96 metres beneath the citys surface and will run for 8 km from Foster Park on a curved path through the downtown area running parellel to the St. Marys and Maumee Rivers The tunnel will connect with the existing sewer outfalls and redirect the water to the Water Pollution Control Plant where it will be treated.
In the summer of 2018 the TBM will be delivered and assembled to start work. The project will also include nine drop shafts, 4-8 feet in diameter, to direct sewage from surface sewer pipes into the tunnel in several neighborhoods.
