Anglian Water Services require 4.9 km tunnel at depths of between 20 m and 47 m through difficult ground including the Upper Chalk bed which is saturated at up to 2 bar and has flint bands, glacial materials and sarsen stones with compressive strength up to 150 MPa. £26 million contract awarded to AMEC Tunnelling who will use new Lovat RME115SE 2.44 m-diameter EPB with mixed-face cutterhead powered by six hydraulic motors rated at 263 kW. Six-segment gasketted trapezoidal lining supplied by Buchan. 20 m/day expected. 11 shafts to be sunk down to maximum 50 m depth. September 1998.
