The Swiss Parliament voted in favour of constructing a second road tunnel through Mount Gotthard, doubling capacity on the main axis linking Germany and Italy through the Swiss Alps. A majority of upper house lawmakers accepted the proposal for a second tunnel to reduce congestion and improve safety on the artery. The lower house approved the plan in December. The construction would cost about CHF900 million ($689 million). 25/03.
