The Swedish National Rail Administration has appointed the í…F Group as consulting engineers responsible for electrical engineering, signalling and telecommunication systems in conjunction with the City Line in Stockholm. The City Line project is a single-tube double-track rail tunnel between Tomteboda in the centre of Stockholm and commuter stations on the south side of the city. The 5.6 km-long 110 m² tunnel will be built to expand rail traffic capacity on the southern approach to Stockholm. The project also includes two underground stations in Stockholm City and Odenplan. Geology will mainly consist of Stockholm granit. Drill/blast to be used except for the central area that will be build in cut-and-cover. Construction work to start in 2006 and expected to take five and a half years. Cost: SEK7.3 billion. Government to propose a railways financing plan for the coming years in January 2004. The City Line is part of the plan. E-mail kjell-ake.averstad@banverket.se 49/04.NCC has signed a SEK1.5 billion contract with Banverket, the Swedish rail administration, to build the Norrström tunnel, a section of the city line from Riddarholmen to Norrmalm, north of Stockholm central station (T-Centralen). The contract involves the drilling and blasting of rock tunnels, approximately 1 km in length, including track tunnels, two station tunnels, service tunnels, escalator and elevator tunnels, and ventilation tunnels. The station tunnels are 25 m wide and 9 m high, while the double-track tunnels are 12 m wide and 7 m high. The station is situated below Stockholm's existing central station and three metro lines on a depth of 40 m. The station will comprise two station tunnels, two platforms and four tracks. Click here. The rock is Swedish granite and gneiss. Altogether, it represents approximately 510,000 cubic metres of rock excavation. Construction will begin immediately and NCC's part of the project will be completed in 2015. When the line is complete, it will double the capacity of rail services through Stockholm. It will also have an impact on rail traffic to the rest of Sweden. The two stations, City and Odenplan, will be important hubs.
