Hofoldinger Aqueduct

  Third and final $51 million section to complete pressure tunnel to replace 30 km-long, 100 year-old aqueduct carrying pure drinking water to the city of Munich from collection caverns in the foothills of the Alps awarded to Hochtief. Contract includes five shafts with diameters 8 m to 12 m to 20 m depth. Tunnel will be 3.4 m bored diameter, segmentally lined, backgrouted with additive-free cement, and internally lined with 2.2 m-diameter steel pipes. Earlier contracts for 10 km-long and 2.5 km-long sections executed by Bilfinger & Berger using Lovat EPB. Construction to commence in May, 2000. October 1999.  Lovat 3.15 m TBM with mixed face cuttinghead ordered by Hochtief for 17.45 km tunnel at 1.49 % grade in two drives from centrally-located shaft. Geology consists of predominantly dense to very dense sandy gravel, clay and silt over 60 % of the alignment and conglomerate with UCS of 10 Mpa over the remainder. Four-piece expanded lining of precast concrete segments 1.2 m long and 125 mm thick will be erected by TBM. November 1999.
