  Roads & Streets Department plan for northern port access scheme now requires 5.6 km connection with M1 motorway to include 4.5 km twin-tube tunnel. Design/build contract value I£150 million. Dublin Corporation and the National Roads Authority in Ireland have announced the award the $450 million design/construct contract for the Port Tunnel to Nishimatsu Mowlem Irishenco. The port road will be a 5.6 km-long dual carriageway, most of which will be in a 4.5 km-long twin-tube tunnel. Construction will commence in early 2001, using two TBMs to accelerate the overall process. The tunnel should open in mid-2004 to provide a high quality access route for the 2 million trucks that currently travel through the city each year to the port. The anticipated method of construction may be TBM, NATM with excavators in soft materials under umbrella vaults or in harder rock using drill and blast. Read E-News Weekly 29/2005. 50-51/07.Shapir Civil & Marine Engineering and Alpine Mayreder are in the process of signing a NIS1.5 billion contract to build section C of the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem high speed line, including two twin bored tunnels. The first tunnel on section C (tunnel #2) is named Hachoresh tunnel and is 2 x 1.2 km long. It was originally part of section B but has been integrated into section C further to project changes. The second tunnel (tunnel #3) is named Hachamisa and is 2 x 11.5 km long. The contract is expected to be signed in the first quarter of 2008 for work to commence in April. The short tunnel #2 will be built in softer ground than tunnel #3. About 300 metres in the west part on each bore of tunnel #2 will be built using the cut-and-cover method. The long tunnel will be driven from west to east probably by a double shield hard rock TBM (3/4 of the length) and from east to west by drill and blast (1/4 of the length). Geology is hard rock, mainly dolomites. The closer to Jerusalem, the harder the rock. The tunnels will be 9.2 m in diameter. From order to proceed to completion, construction will take 44 months. The Electra Bogl JV group, comprising Electra Ltd, Electra Infrastructures, Hasharon Excavators Ltd, Signon Schweitz AG, and Max Bogl Bauunternemung GmbH & Co KG., has been awarded the EUR170 million contract for planning, construction, and maintenance of the track and systems of the A1 high-speed route Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport - Jerusalem. Construction will include laying 46 km of track; setting up electromechanical systems that support railway operation, management, coordination, and supervision; and integration of all the installed systems. The final breakthrough of the second bore of the 11.6 km-long tunnel 3 between Yitla creek and Mevaseret Zion on the A1 fast rail link took place on 06.10.2014, marking completion of tunnelling on the project. The bridges and the new station in Jerusalem are in the final stages of construction. The railway infrastructure work is slated for completion in 2017, and commercial operation of the line is expected in 2018. The line is designed to carry passengers at speeds of up to 160 km/h, with 28 minutes of travel time between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Visit http://www.rail.co.il. 07/15.

Mount Carmel Highway

  Contract awarded to jv of Dragados and Ashtrom for 9.6 m-wide twin tubes, 1.7 km-long at the east side in hard dolomite using drill/blast and 3.3 km-long at the west through chalk, volcanic tuff and dolomite by roadheader. Initial support by resin bolts, arches and shotcrete and final lining reinforced concrete. Excavation to commence in 2000 for completion in 2005. Design consultants Intecsa, value $135 million. June 1999.Carmelton, the consortium that won the tender in 1998 to construct the Carmel tunnel project in Haifa, has subcontracted the building of the tunnel to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). The Carmel tunnel project involves the construction of two dual-lane tunnels of 5.5 km each under Mount Carmel, connecting the northern and southern arteries of Haifa.
