Estimated tunnel length in rock is 10.6 km (3.7km + 6.9 km). It also includes the construction of concrete portals with estimated length of 430 m and construction of approx. 3.3 km-long road sections.Contract documents were sent on 20th January, 2006 to the six following contractors or groups of contractors: Islenskir adalverktakar / Marti Contractors; Metrostav / Hí¡fell; Istak; Arnarfell; Leonhard Nilsen & Sí¸nner / Héraí°sverk; and China Railway Shisiju Group Corporation. The contractors shall return their tenders no later than 14th March, 2006. It is estimated the contract will be awarded in the beginning of May 2006 for construction start in July 2006.The project actually includes two separate tunnels connected by a short stretch of road. Both tunnels are almost entirely situated within the same geological formations, a lava pile built up of olivine basalt layers with thin interbeds. In general, core drillings along the tunnel routes revealed a relatively solid mass of rock, feasible for the construction of tunnels. The rock mass quality (Q) is typically between 3 and 7. Earthquakes have occurred at the project area. According to IST 13, this part of the country is classified under Area 4 (highest impact area). It is assumed that the tunnels will go through at least three local geothermal sections.The design of the tunnels as well as the contract documents are based on and refer to the conventional drill-and-blast method. However, other excavation methods may be suggested in an alternative tender. Support to be implemented mostly with bolts and shotcrete with/without fibres.
