On 27.02.2018 the TBM Luz de America, one of the 3 machines used by Acciona in the Quito Metro Line 1 Consortium, reached its third station, La Magdalena. It travelled 1,700 m and installed 1,134 lining rings since leaving the El Recreo station last December 2017.
La Magdalena multimodal station was constructed during Phase 1 of the Quito Metro and will allow Quito residents to travel to a variety of districts around the city.
The Luz de America TBM is responsible for constructing around 8.1 km of underground track for this transport system, from Solanda station to La Alameda station. This machine will undergo maintenance for 20 days at La Magdalena station before continuing to the next one, San Francisco, in the city’s historic centre.
The Luz de America and La Carolina TBMs are working simultaneously and have already bored 6,808 m of tunnel lined with 4,538 rings.
The TBM Carolina started from the Moran Valverde Station in mid-February towards the Quitumbe Station, which will be its last stretch to complete its 3.6 km total route. The third TBM, La Guaragua, has drilled 4,478 m and placed 2,977 rings and passed through four stations - Labrador, Jipijapa, Inaquito and La Carolina.
The metro’s future Line 1 will have a 22.6 km tunnel and 15 stations, connecting the north, centre and south of the city of Quito. The works are currently 55.06% complete, with 63 active sites including stations and supplementary works.
