The Shnogh hydro project Armenia

16/02/2018

Last year on the 27th of October  in the hall of the Ministry of Energy Infrastructures and Natural Resources of the Republic of Armenia, Debed Hydro LLC, a subsidiary of the Energy Investment Holdings CJSC—the company registered and operating in Armenia—and The Robbins Company signed a Memorandum ofUnderstanding (MoU) for construction of the Shnogh (also called Shnokh) Hydro Power Plant (HPP) project in Armenia.

The 76 MW Shnogh Project (also called Shnokh) is located near Shnogh, a village 20 km south of the Georgian border, on the Debed river flowing through Armenia’s northern Lori province.

The Shnogh project is a run-of-river plant which harnesses the water from the Debed (formed by confluence of Dzoraget and Pambak and Martsiget rivers, which will be dammed behind a 25m high concrete weir, and conveyed to the powerhouse along a long free-flow tunnel, a pressure shaft (230m), and a high pressure tunnel. The intake dam is on the Debed river a few kilometres downstream of the confluence of the Pambak and Dzoraget rivers.

The outlet of the tailrace tunnel is located on the Debed river approx. 20 km downstream of the intake near the village of Neghots. The two turbines will be housed in a surface powerhouse located on the bank of the Debed River, in the vicinity of Neghots village.

The Robbins Company is a willing participant in the Shnogh HPP project contributing one of its own TBMs for boring a 22-km long headrace tunnel. They will also be providing a crew for performing the boring works and training  local Armenian labour, and overseeing the process of boring works during entire duration of the project.

The tripartite Framework Agreement to Design, Develop, Finance, Build, Own, and Operate the Shnogh HPP was approved by the RA Government’s Decree N 973-Ա dated August 10 and signed by the RA Government, Debed Hydro LLC (as a Developer) and Investors Club of Armenia closed-end contractual nonpublic investment fund (as a sponsor).

Shnogh is estimated to cost EUR120-152 million (USD150-190 million) to develop. Click am/13 for tunnelbuilder archive. Visit https://eih.am/.07/18.
