On August the 16th TBM Nancy broke through a wall
of rock at the site of the future Pitt Street Station, about 20m below the
heart of Sydney’s CBD. Nancy had clocked up 6km of tunnelling since her launch back
in October 2018.
The first metro breakthrough for North Sydney was the 150m
long TBM Wendy which broke through at the new Victoria Cross Station, 25 m
below ground and she entered the biggest underground cavern built on the Sydney
Metro project.
Wendy has tunnelled 4.5 km from Chatswood in eight
months and only has another 1.7 km to go to reach the edge of Sydney Harbour at
Blues Point. Wendy is one of five TBMs busy excavating 15.5 km twin railway
tunnels to help deliver more metro rail services as quickly as possible. The huge cavern at Victoria Cross is 40 %
bigger than both the cavern being built at Barangaroo and the cavern built 25 m
under Castle Hill on the new North West Metro.
TBM Wendy will spend about 3 weeks undergoing maintenance
before being re-launched to complete the last 1.7 km section of the 6.2 km
tunnel between Chatswood and the edge of Sydney Harbour.
