On 17.12.2012 in Berne, Switzerland and Italy signed declarations of intent aimed at intensifying cooperation in rail transport and energy. The Memorandum agrees corridor enlargement for freight traffic on Italian territory in order to take full advantage from the new transalpine tunnels. By doing so, containers and semi-trailers can be transported by rail direct to the main economic centres of Northern Italy. In the declaration of intent, Switzerland and Italy provide an adjustment of height limits along the railways Chiasso-Milan and Ranzo-Gallarate (Luino line) in Italy. Switzerland has already agreed to financial support for the necessary work in Italy, allocating approximately SwF230 million to the fund for large-scale railway projects (FTP) and the rail infrastructure fund (FInFer) by 2017.
