On September 13, 2024, the Swiss Federal Council approved the construction of the final 3.5 km stretch of the N28 between the Fideris/Jenaz and Küblis/Dalvazza junctions. The current road is narrow and winding, with limited space shared by the Landquart riverbanks, the existing national road, and the Rhaetian Railway. As a result, slow-moving traffic travels through Fideris, and trains must reduce their speed to 45 km/h.
Upon completion, the existing road will be reserved for local traffic and slower mobility, while the newly constructed route will accommodate transit traffic. Additionally, a section of the Rhaetian Railway will be relocated into a 1.35 km tunnel, allowing trains to reach speeds of up to 120 km/h, which will help stabilize timetables.
The road and railway projects are closely interconnected, as building the new road section requires the railway line to be moved into the mountains. Due to the complexity of coordinating these two projects, a joint approval process was initiated under the Federal Railways Act to ensure proper synchronization.
Construction is expected to begin in 2027 at the earliest. The road project is estimated to cost €164.3 million (CHF 156 million), while the railway section is projected to cost €177.99 million (CHF 169 million). Visit https://www.admin.ch/ . 39/24.
