The Second Avenue Subway (SAS) will be New York City’s first major expansion of the subway system in over 50 years. The line will stretch more than 136 km along the length of Manhattan's East Side, from 125th Street in Harlem to Hanover Square in Lower Manhattan. The subway line will be built in four phases and all phases will be completed by 2029. The first phase of the SAS will provide service from 96th Street to 63rd Street as an extension of the Q Line train and it is expected to open at December 2016 with three new stations at 72nd, 86th and 96th Streets and an expanded station at 63rd Street and Lexington Avenue, currently used by the F train. Once service begins, the Q Train will operate on the Second Avenue line.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has begun procuring key services necessary for Phase 2 of the SAS, which will extend the subway project to East Harlem in Manhattan and includes three new stations at 106th Street, 116th Street and 125th and Lexington Avenue. The SAS 125th Street Station will have interior connections with the existing subway station at 125th Street and Lexington Avenue and with the existing Metro-North station at 125th Street and Park Avenue. There will also be storage tracks and a bulkhead at 129th Street and Second Avenue for a future extension of the subway service to the Bronx.
