Moscow tunnel of death

08/04/2008
Moscow tunnel of deathThe 2.2 km Lefortovo tunnel in Moscow has been nicknamed the "tunnel of death" by local motorists, and watching the video it is not hard to see why. Running underneath the Yauza river, which flows through the city, its roof has started leaking water on to the road. On very cold days, when the Russian winter temperatures regularly drop to -12°C, the water then turns to ice, making the surface dangerously slippy.Russian drivers are apparently a hardy breed, though, and as the video shows they are undaunted by such considerations as icy roads, high speeds, concrete walls and inevitable death. The maker of the video claims that all the accidents shown in the eighty-second clip are from a single day during the 2006-07 winter. However, it is believed that, miraculously, no one was killed in the crashes shown. This video is taken from the security cameras of the tunnel, which opened in 2003 and forms part of the Moscow ring road. View the video at www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oKGuOi8Waw 14/08.
