The Morrison and Marshall Governments have put EUR3.43 bn
(AUD5.4 bn) on the table towards completion of the final 10.5 km section of the
78km North-South Corridor, between Darlington and the River Torrens, in South
Australia.
Once complete, the North-South Corridor will be the major
non-stop route for north and south bound traffic, running between Gawler and
Old Noarlunga.
The final section will link the Darlington upgrade which is
currently under construction to the recently-opened Torrens to Torrens project.
This project will be the major route for freight and
commuters traveling north and south and will slash travel times and boost
economic productivity.
In October 2018 the Marshall Government awarded the
contracts for the business case development of the remaining section of the
North-South Corridor and for the investigation into the viability of tunnels. Price
Waterhouse Coopers (PWC) will develop the business case for the remaining 10.5-km
River Torrens to Tonsley Boulevard section of the North-South Corridor.
A team led by SMEC, WSP and Tunnelling Solutions will
undertake the technical study to investigate the viability of tunnelling. “Through
the business case process, we are assessing what will deliver the best outcome
and if that is going to include one long tunnel, a number of smaller tunnels or
at grade motorways”.
The final section of the North-South Corridor is set to cost
more than the other 68 km that has either been built or is currently under
construction. Click here for a video on the project. Visit https://premier.sa.gov.au/news/54-billion-on-table-to-help-finish-north-south-corridor for further information.
