On 16/01/2016 the Municipalities of Milan, Cinisello Balsamo, Sesto San Giovanni and Monza, the Metropolitan City and the Lombardy Region gave the Milan Metro the contract to re- award the works to a new contractor. The original project was stopped for more than a year because of the failures of the previous contractor and their issues with alignments and financing. On the 01/12/2016 CIPE approved the funding of EUR23 million to continue the extension of line 1 and line 5 in Milan. The new underground station for the Red Line will be connected directly with the A4 motorway, the highway SS36 Monza - Lecco, the North Milan's ring road and the road to Monza. The works include the 1.9km line M1 extension from Sesto FS to Monza Cinisello stations at Bettola - with the intermediate station at Sesto Restellone – which includes 1.5 km of tunnels. The restart will begin in March 2017 Work is scheduled for completion by the summer in 2019.
