Longest Croatian Road Tunnel Opens on Zagreb-Split MotorwayThe entire 375.5 km Zagreb-Split motorway A1, which connects Croatia's north and south, was officially opened on 26th June, 2005 by Prime Minister Ivo Sanader as he inaugurated the last 33 kilometres between Pirovac and Vrpolje. The first tube of the Mala Kapela tunnel, the longest road tunnel in Croatia, was opened to traffic on 24th June on the Bosiljevo-Sveti Rok section of the motorway. The east bore is not equipped and will be used as emergency and escape tunnel. It will be opened once the traffic in the west tunnel has reached sufficient levels. The 5,760 m tunnel connects two sections of the Zagreb-Split motorway, one running from Josipdol to the Mala Kapela tunnel and the other from the Mala Kapela tunnel to Zuta Lokva. The entire project is worth 17 billion kuna, excluding VAT. The entire infrastructure has 26 bridges, 50 viaducts and 14 tunnels, among which the Sveti Rok tunnel (5,670 m) and the Plasina tunnel (2,300 m). Read E-News Weekly 51/2002.
