Slovenia and the Austrian province of Carinthia signed a letter of intent on 09.12.2011 to build a second tube for the 7,864m-long Karawanken road tunnel. The tunnel connects motorways A11 in Austria and A2 in Slovenia. Karawanken was originally planned as a twin-tube but, because of low usage, has remained a single-tube, two-way tunnel since opening to traffic in 1991.
