Highest Road Tunnel?The Eisenhower Tunnel is claimed to be the highest vehicular tunnel in the US, and maybe the world, at an altitude of 11,158 ft (3,403 m) on I-70 in Colorado. Construction on the westbound bore began March 15, 1968 and was completed five years later on March 8, 1973. Originally called the Straight Creek Tunnel, it was later officially named the Eisenhower Memorial Bore.
