Highest Road Tunnel?The Eisenhower Tunnel is claimed to be the highest vehicular tunnel in the US, and maybe the world, at an altitude of 11,158 ft (3,403 m) on I-70 in Colorado. Construction on the westbound bore began March 15, 1968 and was completed five years later on March 8, 1973. Originally called the Straight Creek Tunnel, it was later officially named the Eisenhower Memorial Bore. Construction on the second tube began August 18, 1975 and was completed four years later on December 21, 1979. Some 20,000 vehicles/day use the tunnel. Readers's comments to mike@tunnelbuilder.com.
