Engineering underground space - utilising the assets beneath our feet

HS2 Engineering Director and former Chief Engineer at Crossrail Chris Dulake, will be outlining the engineering and environmental challenges presented in the delivery of HS2 at a special one day conference on underground engineering this month.

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Engineering Underground Space 2016 conference, on 15 March, will look at how the UK's most significant projects have strategically used subsurface space to overcome challenges. It will also explore how effective engineering of the space beneath our feet can help to solve problems we face over ground - relieving critically over-flowing cities and driving sustainable urban development.

London’s underground mega-projects, such as the newly christened “Elizabeth Line” and the Thames Tideway Tunnel “super sewer” have raised the profile of underground engineering, highlighting the engineering profession’s ability to deliver transport and waste management solutions using underground space.

The ICE conference will also discuss how enormous benefits can be realised through emerging technologies and enhanced efficiencies,  share case studies and strategies that demonstrate innovation and best practice, and provide a platform for engineers and planners to meet and share experiences from large underground projects both in the UK and overseas.

Renowned underground space experts Han Admiraal and Antonia Cornaro – both of the International Tunneling and Underground Space Association, will chair the event.  Speakers from HS2, London Underground, Taylor Woodrow, BAM Nuttall JV and Mott MacDonald will also be sharing their expertise.

ICE’s Engineering Underground Space conference takes place on 15 March at ICE’s HQ in Westminster, London.  Find out more at: http://www.ice-conferences.com/ice-engineering-underground/. 10/16.
