Construction begins on Fehmarnbelt Tunnel entrance

15/05/2022

On the 5th  May works officially began on the Fehmarnbelt tunnel portal on the Danish side, where train and car traffic will in future run through the 18-km-long tunnel to Germany. A ceremony for the workers has been held on the construction site with musical elements from a choir from Lolland Music School.

The concrete factory near the Fehmarnbelt tunnel’s construction site will cast the 73,500-t concrete segments to be used for the tunnel construction. Near the coasts, the segments must be connected to the two large portal areas, which provide a smooth transition between the motorway and the railway on land and the tunnel on the seabed.

The tunnel portal on the Danish side will be mainly built on a 550 m by 300 m reclaimed area off the coast and it will be ready for connection of the first tunnel element in 2023.

Corresponding construction of the tunnel portal at Puttgarden on the Fehmarn island in Germany will begin in 2023.
