This October the drill & blast excavation of the 2km La Piramide tunnel in the Recolet municipality started . The tunnel is one of the sections of the Americo Vespucio Oriente I (AVO I) which will join together the Avenida de Grecia (South) with the Avenida El Salto (North) in the east of Santiago, completing the ring road of the city.

The 9.1 km long Avenida El Salto-Avenida Principe de Gales section will cross the San Cristobal hill in a north-south direction, and it will include the municipalities of Huechuraba, Recoleta, Vitacura, Las Condes, La Reina and Nunoa.

The La Piramide tunnel, near the current San Cristobal tunnel, will cross the San Cristobal hill with three lanes, from North to South. This will connect the Puente Centenario with the covered trench currently under construction at Parque Vespucio. The tunnel will be part of the tunnel branch under the Mapocho river, also built using drill & blast, but with a single carriageway, which will allow the connection between the AVO I and Costanera Norte motorways, towards the East, and will connect with the Radial Nororiente motorway , entering Santiago from the North East.
