On 30.01.2013 the Coroners Court in Australia handed down its findings into the Burnley Tunnel deaths arising from the 2007 truck crash, fire and explosions. In a 38-page written judgement Her Honour Judge Jennifer Coate considered the evidence before the Court before making 14 recommendations about tunnel safety. The Court relied in part on a detailed 184-page report from commissioned court tunnel safety expert Professor Arnold Dix.
Recommendations range from signage and emergency evacuation pathways to emergency lanes and the importance of underground communications capacity of first responders. This case is unusual because the Court has permitted the publication of its detailed expert report and the incident occurred in a deluge equipped modern road tunnel.
