The Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport announced that on June 6th, the South bound of the 6,927 m Boryeong Undersea tunnel, Korea’s longest undersea tunnel, had broken through. The North bound or upbound lane toward Wonsan Island had been completed earlier in the year. The construction work was carried out by Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co Ltd (Korea) and began back in November 2012. When completed, the Boryeong Undersea Tunnel will be the world’s fifth longest underwater tunnel following the Tokyo Aqua Line (9.5 km) in Japan, the Bomlafjord (7.9 km), the Eiksund (7.8 km), and the Oslofjord (7.2 km) in Norway. Locally, it's about 1.5 km longer than the Incheon Bukhang Tunnel the previous record holder at 5.46 km.
