On 24.03.2015 the Province of Bolzano approved the project for the construction of the main tunnels of the Brenner Basis Tunnel (Lot Mules) and confirmed the requirements for environmental assessment prepared by the Environmental Committee. Concerned municipalities will be involved in detailed planning for setting up and managing works on site.

The cost for Lot Mules 2 and 3 is about EUR1.4 billion. The project involves excavation and lining of the two main tunnels from the crossing of the Isarco river at Mezzaselva to Mules and excavation of the two main tunnels and of the exploratory tunnel from Mules northwards up to Brenner

Muck will be transported by belt conveyors through the exploratory tunnel up to the stock area in Riga valley in Varna municipality.
