On 23.07.2014 Tecnis SpA (Catania) began work on Lot 1 of the railway ring in Palermo. Value of the project is EUR152 million, with EUR28 million coming from EU funds. The Giachery-Politeama section (Lot 1) includes 1.7 km-long cut/cover tunnel and three new stations at Liberta, Porto and Politeama.

The follow-on Politeama-Notarbartolo section (Lot 2), including a 1,300 m-long rock tunnel and the new Malaspina station, is in design and awaiting finance of around EUR60 million.
