New FAT tests completed for TBMs that will excavate the Lot 3 and Lot 4 of the Palermo-Catania link

On April 19,  another two TBMs - TBM#4 code DZ1379 and TBM#5 code DZ1380 - that will excavate Lot 3 Lercara - Caltanissetta Xirbi, in Sicily, successfully completed the FAT test in the CRCHI factory at Changsha, China. With this FAT test, 4 out of the 5 TBMs that will be employed in the excavation of Lot 3 have now successfully completed testing.

Lot 3 involves the detailed design and construction of 47km of new railway line. The contract includes the construction of about 22 km of tunnels (including interconnections), more than 11 km of rail and road viaducts, 32 km of connected roads, and the modernization of the Vallelunga station. The line will have a maximum speed of up to 200 km/h.

By April 11 2024 the first TBM EPB (code DZ1378, diameter 9.32 m) along with the second TBM (CREG1410) - diameter 9.32m and weight 2250 t – and the third of the six TBMs, an EPB with a diameter of 9.40m had all passed their FAT tests successfully. This will enable them to start work on Lot 3 Lercara-Caltanissetta Xirbi for the construction of the 6.8km Marianopoli tunnel, Lot 3 Lercara-Caltanissetta Xirbi of the Palermo-Catania and Lot 4 Caltanissetta Xirbi-Nuova Enna.

Lot 4A involves the detailed design and construction of 27 km of the line from Caltanissetta Xirbi station (included) to Nuova Enna station (excluded), with the route to be developed mainly as a variant to the existing line. The work also includes 20 km of tunnels and 3 km of viaducts.

The project is part of the improvement of the High-Capacity rail line between Palermo and Catania in Sicily. The benefits of the New Palermo Catania Link:

  • Infrastructural development and sustainable mobility in the South.

  • Reduction in train travel time of about 1 hour between Palermo and Catania.

  • Reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
