The consortium Pedelombarda Scpa, comprising Impregilo (leader), Astaldi, Pizzarotti and ACI secured the Section A of the Pedemontana Lombarda and the first lots of the Varese and Como bypasses. Italtunnel SpA undertook construction of Morazzone tunnel from the south, and Europea 92 from the north.

The rock section of Morazzone is 2,090 m-long, with 12 m-long cut/cover sections at the north entrance and 65 m-long cut/cover at the south. Excavation began in January, 2012, and by early July advance was 280 m for the east tube and 184 for the west tube. The east and west breakthroughs are expected in July and August, 2013.
