Some 32 km of cable tunnels, 14 shafts and four connecting tunnels with associated chambers are under TBM construction by Costain between Hackney and Willesden (3 m-diameter) and between Kensal Green and Wimbledon (4 m-diameter). The 3 m-diameter drive is being undertaken by a CAT dual mode TBM Evelyn, which will complete 19 km of the total. Costain reported today that Evelyn has reached the first shaft, at National Grid’s Channel Gate Road site, having started earlier this year at Willesden substation.
