Construction of the Grouft tunnel (2,950 m) and the Stafelter tunnel (1,850 m) is to start end of 2002 for opening in 2007. Grouft tunnel will have a gradient of 4.5% so that a Mesch-bound third lane has been planned for slow vehicles. The tunnel crosses Luxembourg sandstone at 30-40 metres above the water table so that the groundwater will not be affected by the tunnel. The tunnel will be constructed mainly using the drill and blast method and excavator locally. The choice of the supports will depend on the rock class that is encountered.   Awarded to Razel. Sept 1999.  Extension of Autoroute de la Sarre to connect Saarbrucken in Germany to Luxembourg includes viaduct across Moselle river and 1.585 km twin tube in soft dolomite at 5 % downgrade on continuous 1.8 km-radius curve with three crosspassages. Razel commenced driving 57 sq m top heading November, 1998 from upper portal only using face excavators and hydraulic hammers with Atlas Copco Boltec 435H drilling rockbolt holes and setting Swellex bolts in the crown at 11 off per metre advance and up to another eight in the face as temporary support. No water flushing possible because of hole erosion. Top heading about to reach halfway and 1.8 m-high bench ready to start. Full section will be 80 sq m. Shotcreting using two Normet Spraymec jumbos. 20,000 x 4 m Swellex will be used to complete job. Information from amtunnel@Pt.lu December 1999.
